August 2, 2022 Winnipeg MB: The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) is pleased to announce Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) has contributed $10,000 to bring grain safety programming to communities across Alberta.

“Sponsors like Agriculture Financial Services Corporation make all the difference to the success of the program,” says Lori Derkesn, CASA’s Director of Development. “The support means BeGrainSafe can reach more communities, more farm families, and more firefighters.”

The BeGrainSafe program, the first of its kind in Canada, works to raise awareness, educate and train in the dangers of moving grain. The flagship resource of the program is the BeGrainSafe Trailer, a mobile training and demonstration unit that allows firefighters to experience practical, hands-on grain rescue training.

So far, in 2022, the BeGrainSafe Program has offered Firefighter Grain Rescue Training in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

“Certain risks are inherent in farming and grain entrapment is a major one,” says Darryl Kay, AFSC’s Chief Executive Officer. “While farmers take steps every day to ensure their safety, sometimes things go wrong. When that happens, it is important that there are trained personnel who know what to do.”

“The BeGrainSafe program helps ensure that farmers, their families and others in the ag industry are aware of the dangers of moving grain and know what to do in the case of an emergency. The program also helps ensure firefighters have the knowledge and training to execute a rescue if necessary.”

The BeGrainSafe program would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors including the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal, provincial and territorial initiative, G3, Corteva AgriScience, FMC, CN, Bayer Crop Science, Nutrien, Canadian Canola Growers Association, Viterra, Alberta Wheat Commission, SaskCanola, Alberta Canola, Sask Wheat, Farm Credit Canada, Manitoba Canola Growers, Grain Farmers of Ontario, Prairie Oat Growers Association, GSI and now new sponsor Agriculture Financial Services Corporation.
