The Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting (CAIR), formerly known as the Canadian Agriculture Injury Surveillance Program (CAISP) was established in 1995 in response to the need for better information about fatal and hospitalized agriculture-related injuries in Canada. CAIR is a national program with collaborators in each of the ten provinces of Canada.Why we do it
Agricultural injuries have been recognized as an important rural health issue since the 1960s, when the problem was first recognized in the medical literature. Until the establishment of CAIR, Canadian data on agricultural injuries were limited. This surveillance program has filled an important void in providing national evidence of agricultural injury occurrence that can be used in developing and targeting effective injury-prevention strategies.Who we are
Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting (CAIR) – formerly the Canadian Agricultural Injury Surveillance Program (CAISP) – is an integrated national surveillance project of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association that guides and informs the national agricultural health and safety agenda. A Steering Committee guides CAIR, assigning priority to data quality, research and knowledge transformation.How we do it
To understand the who, what, where, why, when and how of agricultural injuries across Canada, CAIR, through the Injury Prevention Centre (IPC) at the University of Alberta, works with provincial agencies such the offices of the coroner or chief medical examiner, departments of vital statistics or farm safety associations to collect lists of all potential agriculture-related fatalities within each province. Then CAIR’s provincial collaborators pull data from detailed case reports, enter it using a standard data abstraction form and send it on to IPC for verification, coding and analysis. The result is a series of verifiable reports of agricultural fatalities in Canada.Contact us
